I gave my old Aprilia RS50 chassis (after the motor blew up) to my son-in-law who sold it to a fellow who wanted to use the bike to make an elmoto. I am now informed that the RS50, which used to have a 6hp IC two-stroke engine, now is powered by a 54hp 2013 Zero motor. I believe that there are some recent videos on Youtube showing it running around. I understand that the bike will be attending the REFUEL event at Laguna Seca this summer. Attached are photos of the bike when it was running and blowing blue smoke into the air and a photo showing why it is no longer doing so. ;)

Here are some videos of the RS50 elmoto bike on the dyno and doing burnouts, wheelies and stoppies:

I must say I am curious how the batteries, motor and electronics were packaged in the RS's small chassis. It must have been challenging, but it looks like the project was accomplished and the bike still looks great. :)

Thank you Richard230,
Aprilla is a work horse of a bike, long history of racing and technology. It is great that there is a ev motor in there, always love the sounds of 2strokes.
What type of details do you have on the conversion. Did they take your motor:rolleyes:

I sent the busted motor to an elmoto fellow back east (Massachusetts, I believe) who was planning to use the transmission in his build. I can no longer recall his name and I have never heard how that worked out, or if he even gave it a try.

If I find out any more details about the conversion, I will post them here. My son-in-law is going to ask Henry if we can visit him this weekend and check out the bike.

... now is powered by a 54hp 2013 Zero motor....

How'd he do that? I may want to use one of those in my next build. :)

The RS50 worked great on Sunday, no mechanical or electrical problems. I got it running only 2 weeks ago and my racing skills are minimal so I did not attempt to set a fast lap time, which indeed, I didn't, but I had a lot of fun riding it on track and being passed by the fast bikes!

It's got the big Zero motor and size4 Gen4 Sevcon controller, with a 18s/40AH pack of HK LiPo. It's the 54hp drivetrain but on the reduced voltage of my system it is making 28hp at the wheel, on the dyno. The top speed is 65mph (5krpm motor limit, 13:72 gearing) and there is good acceleration particularly in the midrange. It weighs about 280lbs. The plastics and main frame are completely unmodified, it's quite stealthy! It handles beautifully and I like the gearing. There's not enough pack capacity to make an effective freeway machine and the chassis was not designed for high speed, so 65 is plenty. Gearing it that short allows for really sweet acceleration.

Hoping to receive new registration sticker for it soon, DMV has cashed the check so it should be coming. Have been riding it anyways :) It's an absolute blast.

I have lots of build photos from the last ~3.5 months since I started the project including the HK pack build, I have been meaning to pull them together and publish them but I have not done so yet.

Great to hear Henry. The bike looks really nice and you did a wonderful job of packaging the motor, battery and other parts. Thanks for the update and keep the rubber side down.

Where'd you find that clown in no gear to hoon your beautiful scratch-free bike like it's his first time riding? :p
