My newspaper reports that, according to "TheGreenCarWebsite", a collaborative effort by Siemens, Fiat and the University of Sheffield, has produced a car they call the P-MOB (not a very catchy name). This mini car uses on-board solar panels to charge its batteries. At Fiat's test track in Turin, Italy, it was able to travel a distance of 12 miles on only the charge accumulated by the panels. The battery pack can also be charged from a charging station to provide extended range beyond what can be delivered by solar power alone. It is designed to run very short distances, primarily in congested cities, using very little energy. The article did not say how long it took to charge the batteries for that 12 mile trip, nor how bright the sun was that day.

The dream of solar car is a great dream and will unfortunatly stay a dream.
Solar car that can be autonomus with only solar energy will never exist unfortunatly.
It is physically impossible.

Here is why:

Let say that tomorrow someone develop 100% efficient solar panel.
The sun at his better angle and better conditions can give only 1000Watts per squar meter
during short time period and optimum conditions

a normal car need about 5-10kW to run and 10-20kW on the highway.

This would mean between 5 to 20 sq meter of the best of the best solar panel that still dont exist yet.

How can you cary such surface of solar panel on a car that dont look like a big wing on 4 wheels..

Also that surface would require to be constantly oriented to the sun wich make it more complicate.
