Today's newspaper reports that GE plans to purchase 25,000 EVs by 2015, which would convert half of its vehicle fleet to electric power, in an effort to "give the nascent technology a jump start and help develop a potentially big new market for the company". GE said that it would buy 12,000 GM vehicles starting next year, beginning with the Volt. It plans to purchase additional electric vehicles as other manufacturers expand their EV offerings. The article says that every major automaker has plans to introduce EVs over the next two years. The article also mentions that the battery that powers the Leaf costs about $12,000, or nearly the price of a gasoline-powered car of the Leaf's size.
