Anxiously awaiting news from Lighting on their 2011 race bike. They set a goal of dropping 80kgs and adding 40-50hp. I was wondering how close they got?

I can't find their website anymore!

I sent a message to Lightnings mechanic, and got back, " Under Gag Order from the Boss". Must be some serious tweaking going on ???

I REALLY hope that's what it is. Seeing their website appears to be gone has me much more concerned about if they will even be back. Do you think that's unrealistic fear?

I don't blame them for putting a gag order on. I'm a blabber mouth. :D

I'm not comfortable pushing for answers, so, I'm just going to quietly sit and wait. Might have something to do with the rules ?? Hope this doesn't push competitors out of the series.

Well, here are the facts:

1. Last years bike is over this year's weight limit.

2. Mr. Hatfield said in an interview on www.egrandprix.tv 's VIR round, that their goal for this years bike was to be 80kg lighter and 40-50 more hp.

3. The economy sucks.

4. When asked about this years bike, the reply is that there is a gag order.

So I don't think dropping 50lbs to fit under the weight limit is that big of a concern, considering what their goal was. But, I am not sure they sold any bikes this year. Azhar didn't seem to think they had. But he also didn't seem to have seen the interview on his own website. :D Please don't push. I just thought maybe you had been in regular contact and could assure me I was over reacting, and everything was going to be ok.

Pardon me while go curl up in the fetal position and cry myself to sleep. :D

Actually, I just have informal contact with the Mechanic. He is easy to talk with, so, I just asked about updates. Believe me, I have NO inside contacts, or, any privileged info. Just a guy that likes the E Movement, and EBike racing.

OK, the website is there again. http://www.lightningmotorcycle.com/index.html

I went to that same link like 3 times last night, and all I got was one of those buy this domain type of pages. Maybe just a glitch?

Are you referring to Jeff Major?

If he told you that he'd have to kill you.

This is what bothers me the most about the TTXGP, Azhar and all that rules wiki BS. Somebody just out of the blue decided to change a rule to exclude the reigning NA champion. What does that say to future competitors? Do well. Win. And we change rules and outlaw you. You think Yates was pissed? Maybe Lightning ain't real happy either. Just a guess.

lugnut, lightning was going to make there bike lighter anyways, before the rule change. The rule tells them that they cant just sit back and bring the same bike they brought last year and expect to win. The only problem with the rule is that it makes it tougher on new teams that maybe didnt calculate this or that into their weight estimate. But the strength of electric motorcycles in the passion of the people building them. Ill tell you this no stinkin weight limit is going to stop these people from showing up with a bike. ie Lightning

Its time to move past this rules yipyapping and f'in race some cool ****

Bring it on! I'll plan on being at Infieon to help anyone there that needs it. I want to see a packed grid with bikes ready to make for some good racing.

That is beside the point. I see the issue being about the integrity of the sanctioning body, its owner, motives and such things. And the message I see coming across is: If we can't beat you on the track, we'll beat you with the rule book.

What point, your point or the point of the original discussion?

Godwin's Law (lugnut Corollary): Within three posts of any topic, the discussion thread will involve unfair ruling practices of the TTXGP, specifically, weight regulations.

You must be a riot at a party.

oh crap, did I log in again? must. escape. black. hole.

also the my thoughts are that lightning will most likely be using the same EV1 motor but with a beefed up controller to maybe run high current to get more torque out of it. I also think they may have decided a new case for the motor which helps it get lighter and smaller. They mostly will have a new chassis (old one was actually designed for land speed racing). This is all speculation and is the route I would go if i was them.

You right :-) It was my point. I guess I really liked the old #80 yellow flying banana with Barnes atop getting faster every race. I hope they come back with something even more exciting and kick everybody's ass again this season.

Nah. I'd be surprised if they used the same motor this year.

Yea you may be harlan especially if they are going to make a production run of bikes considering the EV1 isnt in production. My only thought is that they have a lot of expertise on the controllers side so i believe they could really get the most out of the EV1.

But i would have to lean more towards the new motor approach. Wonder if they are sticking with an induction motor? mission is using one...

I can see it now, one rider calmly walking towards another and out of nowhere *bam* smacks him with a 4" thick rule book :D

My thoughts exactly. Hatfield could only have so many of those EV1 motors lying around and they are planning a production bike.

DaveAK

I wouldn't get hung up on race vs. production bikes unless it's a homologated series. I doubt he'll go with the EV1 motor simply because it's big and heavy.

Lightning and Mission should go into business together :)

but i'd prefer more competition. more and more I see this year as the year for electric motorcycles to gain some legitamite footing. Instead of people doubting the bikes and being shocked by their performance. We will see more people being surprised by the innovations.

Ok ill put it this way. Instead of knocking people of their seats, we'll have them sitting on the edge of them in anticipation!

Thanks Frodus. Now I can wait in great anticipation, and not anguish. :D
