Oooh. What charger did you get that goes up to 131v?

Spoonman replied to the thread maintenance on a diy electric motorcycle.
" All comes down to the sizing of power components, their monitoring and the way you put them to use.

The only stressors, or points of fatigue on the system (beyond the remaining few mechanicals you mention above) are heat and vibration.
The former is a function of current vs cross-section or mass; the latter comes down to how you mount things into the bike.

In short, as long as your battery is well maintained (so fit a decent BMS) the rest can be kept in check by using the right type of fixings and components sized appropriately for their duty load. "

" electric vehicles are supposed to be more maintenance free than ICE powered vehicles due to their greater simplicity. However, there's a big difference between something that's designed by professionals, vs something that you make yourself in a garage. I'm wondering aside from the regular perishables (eg. tires, brake fluid, brake pads, drivetrain components), what kind of maintenance is usually expected for a diy electric motorcycle? in theory, there shouldn't be any, but i know murphy's law all too well to actually believe that. I can see temperature management of the motor and battery pack being a potential issue that might need some tweaking from time to time. the motor mount might be another one, because we're putting something on there that the frame wasn't really designed to handle. What else? How common do these problems typically arise? "

" maybe try applying hydrophillic coating on the inside of the visor? fog occurs when tiny beads of water form on a hydrophobic surface. with a hydrophilic surface, the water coat the visor evenly in a film, instead of droplets (ie. no fog) "

" Got the first mounting plate. The Manta 2 from Ebay DOES NOT fit the ME1507. The holes on the 1507 are different, also there's not enough clearance between the holes and the bend. I'll have to fabricate something for the ME1507. It does (barely) fit the ME1304. The holes could line up a little better, and there should be more clearance between motor and the bottom of the bracket at the bend, but it works.

Got the rear sprocket (28T) yesterday and got it installed in place of the old sprocket. Using one of the Amp front sprockets for the motor.

I got a Size 4 controller to try out from a Zero motorcycle. Will make a mount that can hold the size 4 or 6.

just checking all of the systems, wires and temps before we fix all of the holes in the
body and get it wrapped.

Smokey burnout will be mandatory....

The Kelly was great, worked immediately from turn on and had no problem getting me up to 95 mph on the highway.
However the lure of more off the line torque and a torque throttle vs speed throttle made me decide to try a move to sevcon.

It has been 6 months now of playing with programming the sevcon and I will say that it is frustrating,(hair pulling?) even with frodus's great help and suggestions.
I am still trying to get it to be as stable the kelly and while i am still tuning the PID settings I am not yet having any better acceleration. At this point for me though the thought of going back to the kelly after all the re-wiring I did seems like too much work.

I am an engineer with a pretty strong electro/mechanical background so I am willing to put in the long hours to eventually make it work how I want. If you just want it to work right away however I found the kelly to be much easier.

So:
Pros for the Kelly: Turn Key install, Auto tune motor parameters, easy to use app to change settings, stable, less expensive.
Cons: Speed throttle vs torque throttle( didn't really bother me), equivalent start torque to a 350CC motorbike. that's about it.

As for my bike I am running a 96V chevy Volt pack with a ME0913 Motor.
Charles,
email me, I haven't heard from you in a while. Lets take a peak at the file you're using. You shouldn't need to change the PID settings.... but maybe the max torque is turned down low. "

Motor mount (Manta 2) arriving tonight, the one from kartmasters should be here next week.

Ordered a 96V DeltaQ so I can play with higher voltage packs.

Ordered about 100 of the VL41M cells (41Ah saft cells). maybe 30 or so going in the Kart, the rest for spare and maybe another project/powerwall/testbench. "

No plans so far. There is a large inventory with my supplier of these Size 6 controllers and I'll be working to sell those before considering going to anything else. It requires a direct relationship with Sevcon and a large number of sales numbers per year. No one else that I've seen (EV Vendors) are selling those either. "

Awesome. Start a build thread if you haven't already and post some details of what you're looking to do. Lots of help here on the forum to get you sorted. "
