" Just like the last 100 years...we are still waiting for the battery to match gas. It isn't going to happen. The physics don't allow it. But we can get close enough. This guy runs a battery research lab. He is not as hopeful as most of us. But then, he knows what he is talking about.

He, like most researchers, are puzzled, but hopeful, for the performance claims of the new Goodenough battery. If it is actually working as claimed, there is some new/unexpected stuff going on. I certainly hope it works. As much as I appreciate current li-ion batteries, using them, you know all the frustrating limitations. "

" An update on this:

Back in late February John Goodenough announced just such a breakthrough in battery technology. The new tech can use Lithium or Sodium and hold at least 3X the density of current Lithium batteries. They were very robust during fast charge and repeated charging because they use a glass (not liquid) electrolyte and cannot form power-sucking dendtrites as the alkali metal moves from anode to cathode. A good article from March 17 is here:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesco...etting-better/

And here is an update in an online Q&A from April 19:

https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/...n-b-goodenough

There are some details in there that might interest readers on ElMoto. I will summarize some of them:

  • Lower temperature operation: -20C (-4F)
  • Less heat generation during charg and discharge
  • Faster to charge
  • More recharge cycles with less degredation (maybe almost zero)
  • Cheaper to manufacture
  • Easier to recycle
  • Goodenough estimates three years for a large battery manufacturer to have a working factory

" Thanks! It's a good feeling knowing it's now legal - the rest is just tinkering and making it better!
The bearings - looks like it was just a duff one - I took the bearing completely apart after removal, to see what state it was in - firstly there was no grease in it at all, the inner and outer races showed no signs of any damage and likewise under a magnifying glass it was hard to see any damage to the balls, but, rolling them on a flat sheet of glass did reveal that they had flats on them, which is where I was getting the notchiness. The other side bearing was actually filled with grease and was not notchy at all but had some lateral play so was replaced also. The bearings are 61912 ZZ measuring 85mm Outer 60mm Inner and 13mm width.
I only got it finished last night so have only run it on the paddock stand, should get time this weekend to run a couple of full charges through it and get some real world stats.
Cheers,
Mike. "

You'll probably need to ventilate your motor very well. I'm running 7.04:1 and I had to do the following:
- add 12v radial blower to force air into the openings on the shaft side to ventilate rotor
- add 12v fan underneath the motor to ventilate stator
- remove the bell shape cover to help the mechanical fan to suck air out of rotor

The controller also sits on heatsink which are ventilated by two 12v blowers which exhaust is blowing on top of motor.

Which belt have you used ? The Gates Carbon GT ? It has blue teeth, that's the only one which can handle this power in that width and pitch 8 (I presume). "

Thinking of either keeping it bare metal finish it a bit and just clear coat it or go with matte black and bronze. But there is a long time to for that... "
