" There's still a bunch of us drag racing electric bikes. Brushed DC series motors make tons of torque and are more cost effective than permanent magnet or AC motors. There's various controllers out there but the "go to" seems to be the Zilla line, manufactured by Manzanita Micro. Z1K can output 1000 A and the Z2K is good for 2000A. You need sufficient battery to make those work but it's very do-able and not all that much money.

Check out nedra.com for links and more info. I run a Z2K with 84S Lonestar LiPo batteries and have run high 5's at 12x mph in the 1/8-mile at 75% output. I run a Shinko "Hookup" tire, drag slicks work too but aren't necessary. Direct drive means no shock load on the tire from dumping the clutch.

Dice (ElectraFunk Racing) has a few different bikes, hopefully he will chime in. He's gone very quick and fast... "

" Hi folks see that this is a old thread but Wonder if there is anyone here that are still running Electric drag racers. I'm really interested in this topic I have been builiding motorcycles all my life and as a engineer i started working at a Company making Electric post quadracycles. And then I was completely converted from a petrolhead to a amp head. So now I drive a Electric car and have converted everything form Trial bikes, lawn mover tractor, Buildt a 20 Kw goped. Now I'm building a GSX750 street legal Electric motorcycle With a Sevcon size 6 Controller ( About same setup as a Zero SR)
But I do see that a proper build Electric drag bike would really be the ultimate show off. The torque in Electric Things are really great. My son just finnshed a cool build this Weekend lowering and completely rebuilt a retired Paxster post quadracycle I added a video of that on youtube by the way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhnNr5szbZg

But I have never built anything more powerfull than 50-60 Kw With sevcon Size 6 Controller. And I Wonder have any of you done any logs of amp x Volt Down the drag strip.
I would like to get a idea of the torque needed to maximize the grip you have on a drag slik tire. And the amount of energy needer in one drag. In other Words if we could choose among the best parts avilable now how bad ass could we build a drag bike? "

To be fair, I expect that easy 'trailering' is actually a very legitimate concern for most Harley owners alright.

" Just like the legacy auto makers, BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, etc. are not going seriously into electric motorcycles until batteries improve more, or government regulation forces them. For a new company, hoping to get a jump on legacy makers before then, it makes sense. "

" BMW continues to come up with an electric motorcycle design that their customers will love. This is a nice try, but does seem to be a work in progress. Not quite up to Energica's production electric motorcycle standards, though. Gotta keep on trying: https://riders.drivemag.com/news/mee...0-nm-of-torque "

" While I can't get too excited by the name of this EV, nor the riding position, I do like the design. But it seems to be more of a technology demonstrator than an attempt to produce an actual production motorcycle and I am not too sure if I want my motorcycle to communicate with everything in the vicinity, such as garage doors, washing machines and refrigerator ice makers.

One other thing that caught my eye was this comment at the end of the article: To ensure high performance dominance, the company recently added electric powertrain veteran Derek Dorresteyn to its team to head up operations and powertrain development as its new COO. Derek had the technical vision and led the engineering and manufacturing teams at Alta Motors from 2008 – 2018. His vision was key to Alta’s podium finishes against ICE motorcycles. There were some smart people at Alta Motors and it is interesting to see where they are ending up.

so there should be no more work or tooling involved basically.
Bent steel tube in the case of trellis, and welded pressed forms in the case of aluminium for the most part AFAIK.
Machine finishing a cast would certainly be more work than welding up a frame. You can cast the main housings readily enough, but then there's all the tooling operations required to clean mating faces, cut gasket beds, drill and tap bolt holes... the list goes on.

Again, as I'm thinking about it now though - if those steps aren't being performed in the manufacturing of a traditional engine, then the capacity to is still there as it would likely still be less work than machine finishing engine block castings. "
