    Required Power

Hello everyone, I've been playing around the idea of building my first electric motorcycle. sorry of these "newbie" questions. How much energy or power will it take for 100 mile range at 55 mph. If the motor is hooked up directly to a power source; how much does the power source have to generate?

To go about 100 miles at 55mph, you will need about 10kWh of energy. What kind of 'power source' do you mean? Around here we only use batteries. People have investigated using an on-board generator, but it'd be a huge challenge to do with no real advantage over a gas bike. The power source needs to be able to deliver all of the power your electric motor will demand in your maximum power case, such as hard acceleration or climbing a steep hill at speed. Electric motors are about 90% efficient, so this is about 11% more than the electric motor's output power.
