Hey Noah... i like your design idea as I went a different route to keep the Leaf modules weather-proofed.
My idea was to incorporate a stressed member of the frame, aka "box". The main disadvantage of my route is the redundancy of the sardine cans= extra unnecessary weight.
I know the battery pouches need to be compressed. I'm toying with the idea of opening up all of the modules to remove the pouches and then making a compression plate out of Al on one side of the pouch stack, and putting a modified motorcycle tire inter-tube on the other side of the compression plate. The pouches can be compressed with whatever air pressure is needed in the inter tube.
The main advantage of my design is the ability to switch to a different battery chemistry whenever that day arrives.
My main questions about removing the pouches from the sardine cans is how much weight can be shaved off and if any additional space for more pouches will be created, besides how challenging it is to remove them without damaging them. Any experience? If anyone has experience with this, please chime in!

Thanks for the AXE controller... this bike works well , just a bit on the heavy side.
This guy has dissassembled Leaf cells, at 18:11 he says the shell is not that heavy.
