I think the "modern" intersection with traffic signals suck. I would take traffic circles over lighted intersections any day.
They waste energy by making vehicles lose all their momentum and come to a complete stop, and then wait for the green. Energy wasted and time wasted. And 5 point intersections with signals is just dumb.
Ya, so what if traffic circles need more real estate. Somebody needs to invent smarter intersections!

Last year I was riding through the city of Modesto and came across a number of large traffic circles. They had about 6 intersecting streets and I couldn't navigate the circles while reading the street signs to try to pick out my chosen route. I kept taking the wrong street when I went round and round trying to figure out which street to take. I became confused and kept taking the wrong one and ended up going in the wrong direction. It took me about 30 minutes longer to get out of town than it used to when they had normal intersections with traffic lights. I think traffic circles can be a good idea on local residential streets but you don't want to get carried away with the idea, especially along major routes that are used by tourist traffic that might not be familiar with these intersections.

Quiet traffic circles = peg scrapping opportunities.

That was my experience too in Europe. Traffic circles are everywhere over there! I love 'em!!
The problem in Euro is you probably wont know you went the wrong route until your 100 km into it!!
