Club Racing, History and an ElMoto Rally?

Someone I know got tired of hearing about TTXGP being the "First Electric Motorcycle Race", which led to a little back and forth about BettiMoto and their racing 'way back in 1999. I got to googling, and started putting together a series of posts on electric motorcycle racing pre-TTXGP and ePower, and it's really fun stuff. The first post is here, with info on the BettiMoto boys:

I got a comment with a link to some videos from 2003, which are beyond cool:
    http://evmc2.wordpress.com/2011/11/1...ca-2003-video/

Here's one of the broadcast videos:

The coolest thing to me is what these races look like- a bunch of crazy Italians with very cool-looking bikes they built themselves (I'm pretty sure out of forklift motors and lead batteries, with top speeds of around 80mph), hanging out in a big parking lot bumping around cones. Probably drinking beers (or wine, or whatever Italians drink to excess), and swapping lies. Pretty much what I was envisioning for an ElMoto rally... except maybe with some drag racing and informal speed runs, too, and in English.

We've also talked a little about electric club racing... and this is what I was thinking it would look like too. Nothing but fun. And beer.

Track time costs money, so does getting access to air strips and stuff. BUT. The guy who runs the Solar and Wind Expo was all over hosting an event like this at the Expo in Maryland next May. This is exactly what he and I were describing... it gives us a place to play, maybe even some spectators to witness our idiocy, and it gives him an event that bolsters his event.

    OK, who's in?

I love these guys and what they were doing, and I think it's a bit of a shame that, in all the hype, their stuff gets lost in the noise. They probably didn't think much past the next year's race and what they needed to do to their bikes (reminds me of my belt-sander racing), but they truly did pave the way for what we're seeing today!

I've got some emails in to a couple of the guys, and have been giving Google Translate a good workout... stay tuned.

Feel free to add links in the comments. In the mean time I have to get up the motivation to edit a podcast.

That type of parking lot rally cross racing is super fun!

in Livonia Michigan we hold the "Plug in America" Michigan meet, and for the past 3 years we also have an awesome auto cross style race, its only $20 to compete and we hold a little celebration with trophies at the end.

The first year there were few people there other then EV owners, but in 2011 there were hundreds at the event to watch the race and check out all the new electric cars/vehicles.

heres some photos of me taking my motorcycles out on the course.

I would love to get a smaller, more affordable electric motorcycle racing series around the USA (or even world) even if it were simple cones in a parking lot style racing, its gotta start somewhere!

COOL! Tony, can you put me in touch with the folks who put that racing together? Was it you? I'd love to hear more about how they formatted it and stuff.

I got some more on the early racing, including some shots from 2002, which shows them on a proper track... still hoping to hear more from Betti Thomas with some more personal details, but it looks pretty cool. All sanctioned by the FIA too. Besides everything else, I'm learning quite a lot about the whole racing community and sanctioning bodies and such.

...so yeah, this is me, so you guys are pretty much screwed. (I didn't put my real name on it 'cause my wife would see)

(subtitle, cool **** you can do in a parking lot)

This is my gran'pappy. He's kinda slow, but he's old:

So I sent a note to the organizer of the Solar and Wind Expo asking if he was serious about hosting us. He is.

I just set up a Facebook Group to help us get the details worked out. Go here if you want to help work out the deets:
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/301027759920819/
It's a closed Group, but just click the "Ask to Join" button. This should work well for kind of a wiki format.

Also it dawned on me there was this thread over here:

I hope this helps. I seriusly doubt I will have a bike by then. But maybe I can come and "analyze" the race . . . from the beer tent.
