I can't see the eighteenth entry on the press release...
I believe the eighteenth is Rob Barber riding for an Austrian team TGM-IOT (who I also believe have / had? links to HTBLAUVA)

Teams updated, thanks for the info Rob. Team Agni website doesn't look like it has been updated lately. It would be nice to find out who they are fielding. It seems there has been a real drive to get bigger names on the leccy bikes this year, whether this is a result of teams pestering them or a genuine interest from the riders I'm not sure.

Brunel, Koen Matthys and the Japanese

Having a few snaps of their BX-11 bike from the 2011 TTZero, I thought I'd start off some research into Brunel's entry for this year and found out more about the Japanese Komatti-Mirai entry than our fellow university team.

First of all, here's a look at the Brunel BX-11 bike from last year.

    Photobucket

Wrapped in Triumph 675 Daytona bodywork, this is a seriously tidy electric bike; a lot of time and thought has been put into the packaging and getting the bike looking good. The bike also borrows the chassis from the donor bike.

    Photobucket

The attention to detail is superb, check out the heatsink protruding from the neatly finished undertray.
As with the majority of entries, the Brunel effort uses twin Agni 95 motors which are its biggest EV giveaway.

    Photobucket

As also experienced in previous TT Zero and TTXGP races at the IOM, motor life can be unpredictably short and so Brunel ran with only one motor for practice.

So what does Brunel have to do with the Japanese? Well, Dr. Koen Matthys who leads the Brunel X-Team co-founded Komatti racing team who have this year partnered with the Japanese Mirai Motor Co. as reported in this Japanese blog. It also mentions that the team continues the efforts of Team Prozza who entered last year with this tasty looking number:

    Photobucket

Whilst garnering hard facts from the Haku-style Google translation of the Japanese Autoby blog, it does show pictures from the March press event at the Akiba Motor Show cafe which show Matthys, the Komatti-Mirai rider Yoshinari Matsu5hita, and a bike which could be this year's entry or last years... The chassis is evidently Daytona and the twin motors point to Agni units. As with any development in the TTZero bikes, a bike's battery setup and management can make a huge improvements to its performance so perhaps Komatti-Mirai are playing it safe on the reliability fron and gunning for better energy density from an upgraded pack and controller set up.

I've dug up an old video I shot last year of the start of practice session 2 which is here and illustrates fairly clearly the difference in performance between the bikes. Also, if you listen to the difference in the motor speeds you can hear how quiet the Kingston bike IH11 is in comparison to the field whilst still moving off with a decent shove.

Adding the previous results for each team in due course.

Yes, it was drizzling at 1715 on the Mountain while the lightweight ICE's were out. We were meant to go out at 1755 but the weather was deteroirating so it was called off. As there is no racing today or Tuesday and the bikes take over 6 hours to charge there is no way of squeezing the two qualifying sessions in on Monday. Therefore we will only get 2 outings this year. Weather forecast is dodgy for Monday and ok for Wednesday, but Isle of Man weather is so unpredictable we'll just have to ckutch our amuletsd and dance the sunshine dance!
